A coffee plunger, also known as a French press, is a simple and effective way to make coffee. It’s an affordable alternative to expensive coffee machines and can be made at home with just a few household items.
In this blog post, we will show you how to make a coffee plunger and talk about some of the draw backs that also make it not an awesome choice.
The biggest issue with the Plunger is how to get rid of the coffee grounds. If you don’t do it right you’ll have a bunch in your coffee but with this method we’ll teach you how to make it the best it can be.
Step 1: Grind the Coffee Beans
Measure out the coffee beans according to the amount of coffee you want to make. A general rule of thumb is to use a 1:16 coffee-to-water ratio.
For example, if you want to make 480 ml of coffee, you’ll need 30 g of coffee. Grind the beans using a burr grinder on a medium to coarse setting.
Step 2: Preheat the Plunger
Boil water and preheat the plunger by adding some hot water to it. Swirl the water around in the plunger to heat up the glass, then discard the water.
Step 3: Add the Coffee Grounds
Add the coffee grounds to the plunger. Ensure that the grounds are levelled out and not clumped together. Pour hot water over the grounds, covering them evenly. Start the timer and let the coffee steep for four minutes.
Step 4: A choice
You now have 2 options. Move to the next step if you’re in a rush otherwise to level up your plunger game scoop any grounds off the top of the plunger and let it sit for another 4 minutes.
Step 5: Plunge the Coffee
Slowly press the plunger down, using a firm and steady pressure. This will separate the coffee grounds from the liquid, producing a smooth and rich brew.
Step 6: Serve and Enjoy
Pour the freshly brewed coffee into a mug and enjoy it while it’s still hot.
Conclusion
The plunger is a great tool if your going camping or don’t have another option. The best way to remove coffee grounds is a paper filter. I had thought to include a paper filter method into this guide but if we’re doing that it’s probably better to move to a different device. A plastic v60 and paper filters is incredible cheap. It might be better to just move to a different device.
